photo essay greenline1 THE METRO STATIONS OF GREEN LINE NORTH

Metro's Green Line runs due North up 7th Street, NW from the National Archives to Gallery Place (Chinatown--and the new MCI Sports Arena); past Mt. Vernon Square next to the site of the new DC Convention Center under construction; through the Shaw neighborhood and Howard University; and turns west onto U Street. The U Street entrance (lower left) is across from the old Lincoln Theater, and two blocks from the only office building in the area, used by the DC government. The Cardozo entrance (lower right) serves the Cardozo neighborhood and High School, and features the Spirit of Freedom memorial to black soldiers. It remains an economically depressed, if not blighted, area. The Line turns north again on 14th Street to the just-opened, unfinished Columbia Heights Station (upper left), a more depressed area featuring the historic Tivoli Theater, closed and decaying for many years. Signs of economic recovery include several major development sites still being argued over, and plans to rehab a fine old home (upper right) for a non-profit organization. (continued)...
